Nowadays, each individual desires to have various products, such as a private vehicle, a television set, and a refrigerator. Personally, I am inclined to the view that the merits of this trend prevail over the downsides.
The major benefit is that people can have an easy and enjoyable life. If they possess a car, they can freely reach destinations where public transport is unavailable. Using a refrigerator allows them to store foods for days, preventing unnecessary waste, and meanwhile makes it possible for people to have cold beverages on scorching summer days. Watching television programmes helps people unwind after they have been working or studying all day.
Another advantage is that the economy will be boosted. With the increasing demand for a range of products, a considerable number of workers are required for mass manufacturing, which creates many job vacancies and increases the employment rate. More excise taxes will also be generated when more products are purchased, which becomes a vital source of government revenue, and the authorities can make use of the money to stimulate a wider variety of business activities.
However, the disadvantages are also obvious, one of which is that environmental degradation can be a public concern. At the production phase, excessive quantities of raw materials, including trees and rubber, will be unsustainably exploited. Irresponsible factories may also discharge contaminated unprocessed water into waterways and emit toxic gases to pollute the air. At the disposal stage, these products will more or less pose a threat to nature no matter how they are dealt with.
In conclusion, I believe there are more positive influences than negative ones if everyone owns a car and other appliances. Despite the damage that using and disposing of these products may cause to the environment, people will be assisted to lead their lives in an easy fashion and an economic growth can be achieved.
